Valentine’s Day… ¿Love it or hate it?

Please I don’t want to rush you. Even tough you know how it is here, this country the king of consumerism, where they are already selling us summer clothes. The truth is that we are two weeks away from one of the most polarized celebrations of the year, as there are those who love Valentine’s Day and others who want to run from hearts or flowers that day.

Legend has it that a Christian bishop named Valentine decided to marry couples in love in an period where marriage was prohibited under the Roman Empire. For this, Valentine was pressured to abandon Christianity. After refusing to do so, he was sentenced to death. His daughter Julia who was blind from birth, is taken to his prison where he lectures her about life and prayer. By a miracle, Julia gets to see. On the eve of his death, Valentine wrote a letter to his daughter asking her to reaffirm her faith in God and he sings it, “From your Valentine.” He would be executed on February 14th.

A love story indeed. And I think that’s what it is all about, a day to celebrate love, love of all kinds not just couples in love but also a celebration of the love that we have for each other, parents, children, siblings, friends, all of it. Yes I am a consumerist and if I were not I would not be living in this country. I love these celebrations, the decorations, I love to see hearts everywhere because I am an eternal romantic. Sure, I agree that it is not necessary to take a day to celebrate love since we should be celebrating it every day of the year, and that couples are not just confined to Valentine’s Day in order to give gifts or show that significant other signs of affection. But it is the same with all the celebrations. So instead of becoming bitter why not enjoy the idea and have fun.

The downside is that there are people who generate high expectations, and focus more on what type of gift they shall receive, hence a lot end up frustrated and wishing either that this day will not come or, that it ends soon. My best advice is to use that day to give kisses and smiles even if is just is virtually (Hello social Media) and if you only love yourself, well… give yourself a gift! Go to a spa, indulge, send yourself flowers and chocolates, does it matter what others think? No! Still you have two weeks to figure it out.

What do you think about this celebration?
